Nov. 11, 2009 – Marriott International, Inc. announced today plans to expand its green hotel portfolio ten-fold over the next five years by introducing a green hotel prototype that will be pre-certified by LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system designed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). The green hotel prototype, which will be available in April 2010, will reduce a hotel’s energy and water consumption by up to 25 percent, based on national averages.
Additionally, Marriott today announced the signing of five hotels, including its first properties in Algeria, Ghana and Morocco.
The New York Times today published an article about an American Journal of Industrial Medicine study indicating that female hotel workers are more likely to be injured than their male counterparts. This is because female workers are disproportionally employed as housekeepers, a job which in the United States has a 7.9 percent injury rate, 50 percent higher than any other hotel job, the article states.
The Starwood Palace hotel in San Francisco has been hit with a workers strike, according to a USA Today article. The unionized workers surprised their employers with the strike; an in-progress fight mainly about how to pay for rising healthcare costs has left employees working without a contract since August, the article states.
Several days ago a three day strike at the Grand Hyatt in that same city ended.
