Nov. 9, 2009 – USA Today published an article today stating an increasing number of large companies and state-level government employers are encouraging their workers to stay at “green” hotels while traveling on the job. Ever more hotels are seeking certifications from independent organizations such as Green Seal or LEED which indicate a business is operating at a certain standard of environmental sustainability.
The results of this are twofold, according to the article. Encouraging employees to stay at “green” hotels gives businesses an opportunity to nurture a positive image. And interest in winning over a new clientele – or reluctance to loose existing clientele – is a factor motivating hotels to strive for environmental sustainability and seek certification.
However, room rates and availability remain the driving factor in such industry decisions, the article states.
In other news, it’s important to remember any sort of traveling requires extra vigilance. The Associated Press reported today a 54-year old American tourist in Puerto Rico was robbed inside his room at the San Juan Ritz Carlton. The robbers bound the victim with lamp cords and a tie before taking $800 in cash along with his debit and credit card. They threatened him until he gave up the code to his debit card, the AP reported.
Six men were arrested in connection with the robbery, and the Ritz-Carlton was not immediately available for comment, the article stated.
In the world of blogs, triplepundit.com released today an aggregated list of statistical data about “green” hotels. According to the blog, 87 percent of respondents to a Conde Nast Traveler survey in April 2009 said it is important to them that hotels be environmentally friendly. The blog reports that a National Leisure Travel Monitor survey in May 2009 discovered eighty percent of travelers consider themselves to be environmentally conscious. And Deloitte Consulting found in May 2008 that 95 percent of respondents felt hotels should be undertaking green initiatives, according to the blog.
It would seem the hotel industry is shifting towards environmental sustainability on account of market pressures and image concerns.
Hotels-in.com is pleased to announce that travel information about three new states were added to its ever-growing databank (Maine, Kentucky & Kansas) along with a blog posting about alternative Disneyland hotels.
