NEW YORK, N.Y., February 23, 2010 – As the official hotel sponsor of the Armory Show 2010, Jumeirah Essex House proudly announces a series of events beginning on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 to celebrate the cultural partnerships that have been a hallmark of the hotel’s prominent Art Program since 2006. Events include an Armory Show kick-off party, private tours of the hotel’s art collection and two new exhibitions.
The week will commence with a VIP kick-off party on March 2, 2010 commemorating Armory Arts Week and The Armory Show. The event, which runs from 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm, will be held in the new Magnum Lounge at Jumeirah Essex House, an exclusive lounge for VIP hotel guests, art dealers, artists and curators.
The week will continue on Thursday, March 4, 2010 with a private, curator-led tour of the hotel’s impressive art collection and exhibitions on view. The tour is only accessible for Armory VIP cardholders and advance reservations are required.
On view at Jumeirah Essex House throughout March 2010 and open to the public will be two exhibitions organized in collaboration with famed photographic co-operative, Magnum Photos. Marhaba: Images of the Middle East will include both black and white and color photographs by Magnum members Abbas, Eve Arnold, Harry Gruyaert, Inge Morath, and Steve McCurry among others. This collection of imagery showcases the open warmth of countries within the region. Beguiling portraits and glimpses of varied cultures are enhanced by exquisite desert landscapes and architectural delights.
Bruno Barbey: Maroc highlights a selection of lush imagery from his book of the same name. Barbey contrasts versatility of technique with consistency of theme, using photography to reveal the subtle complexities of life in foreign countries. His love for and fascination with Morocco, his homeland, remains a focus. His photographs of Fez highlight the yellow ochre and burnt umber tones of the area creating color drenched images which dazzle by Morocco's scorching light.
