As China continues to grow and change, hotels in China are also in an active state of flux. A large country both in terms of land and population, China offers a broad range of landscapes, cultures and living standards. While until recently, foreigners had mainly limited Chinese excursions to the major eastern metropolises, more and more travelers are expanding their visits to include the country’s western regions as well. This development has opened a host of challenges and opportunities for hotels in China.
Accommodations in China come in many forms including family stays, individual room rentals, Chinese-only budget guesthouses and five-star luxury hotels. Staying at hotels in China offers a secure, no-hassle accommodation alternative. In the major urban centers, many hotels in China are on par with those in other developed nations. Some differences do linger and it’s good to be apprised of your hotels standards and amenities before booking. Credit cards, for instance, are not widely accepted in China, especially in smaller, budget hotels. And no traveler should try to find a hotel in China on a major national holiday.
Travelers to major cities like Shanghai or Beijing will find the selection of hotels in China very similar to those in other metropolises around the globe. International hotel chains range from mid-range American groups to the most elite in hotel luxury. These hotels are more likely than other hotels in China to have English-proficient staff on hand. Recently, a number of Western-quality budget hotels have begun sprouting up in these locations as well with rooms starting around ¥150.
Also to be found in China’s cities are the zh?odàisu?. These hotels in China offer spartan rooms, often with shared bathrooms. Until recent years, zh?odàisu? have been Chinese-only institutions, but now foreigners can occasionally slip in with a few words of broken Chinese.
In smaller cities and rural towns, travelers can stay at travel hotels which offer a high-end budget hotel quality. These hotels in China can cost as little as ¥25. Luxury hotels in China are generally not to be found beyond the major cities with the rare exceptions of The Commune by the Great Wall and Banyan Tree in Lijiang.
Hotels in China offer a range of accommodations from simple rooms to luxurious suites. Staying at a hotel in China will enrich and enliven any traveler’s journey through this diverse and changing country.
